THIS IS HISTORY!
Medals Uncovered at Auction

Article by Trevor Mulligan
1 January 2010

During the second half of 2009, I received an email from Gillingham supporter Justin Bennett advising me that he'd purchased two Kent Amateur Cup Final Runners-Up medals at a sports auction in the Midlands (it's amazing how far such things can travel in 80 years!) and, could I help him in his research into which teams played in those finals.

With the kind assistance of Pete Goringe, our Club Statistician, I was able to advise Justin that it was indeed our own Cray Wanderers that played in the 1927-28 and 1928-29 finals, the two matches that the medals represented. This confirmed what Justin already believed, along with the fact that Whitstable had beaten Cray 2-1 in the second of those finals. I could also confirm that the Royal Naval Depot, based in Chatham, beat Cray in the first of the finals by the same scoreline.

After a few more emails were exchanged between Justin and myself, I was offered the opportunity to photograph the two medals, with their related presentation boxes. The photos themselves are now included on this page (below).

My thanks go to Justin, firstly for taking the time to contact me and secondly for affording me the opportunity to photograph a little piece of surviving Wands history. Supporters may have the chance of seeing the medals on display during this 150th birthday year exhibition of Cray Wanderers FC, at Bromley Museum later on in 2010.

Further details about this exhibition will be announced nearer the time.
