A VIEW FROM THE FLOODLIGHT PYLON The looks on several faces at Hayes Lane right now tell their own sad tale. "Was it too soon for promotion for the Wanderers?" the looks of despair seem to say. "Of course not," comes the stern reply, "it's taken Cray the best part of 150 years to be an overnight success." Indeed it has and, what's more, they deserve to be where they are right now (a little higher up the league table would have been a bit more heartwarming, though). Swapping Hob Nob biscuits at half time with the Isthmian hobnobs. Playing in later stages of the F A Cup and Trophy (albeit curtailed). Being the favourites, rather than the underdogs. Rubbing shoulders with non-league's finest. Having Cray's results and fixtures flashed up on Sky Sports News television. As I write this, we are exactly two weeks and one day away from the Club's 150th birthday. How unreal - how surreal - is that? We're all going to be a part of the historical moment - or year - that Cray Wanderers Football Club becomes 150 years old. It's really something that the younger supporters of today can tell their grandkids in years to come. "Ah, yes, sunnee. I was there. I celebrated the 150 years." "And were you there, in 1860, grandpappee when it all began?" they'd retort. "Yooo." and the youngsters who are then the grandparents would chuckle at the cheek of such a suggestion. Of course, the grandparents of today sometimes bring their family, two generations removed, along to games now, so they can't tell them about the 150 years celebration because the youngsters are living it for themselves. The history of our Club couldn't have been better prepared for 2010. The highest level of non-league football ever achieved, a new ground to look forward to and the best bunch of supporters in the world - even if I am courting controversy by saying so! I know that we've got the best supporters on this planet; maybe not so much in numbers, but certainly in passion and enthusiasm. We don't have to be continually singing or shouting about it like all the other clubs' supporters do, the same supporters who bemoan the fact that we never sing. And, why should we? We're too busy concentrating on, and sometimes enjoying, the football. Who decrees that we have to ruin it by revealing we're no crooners? Yep, the Club's biggest ever birthday (so far) is just around the corner. Let's enjoy the Christmas and New Year festivities and then enjoy 2010 even more! Let's give it some welly, everyone! Till next time. MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR and I'LL SEE YOU IN THE WANDS' 150th!!
