A VIEW FROM THE FLOODLIGHT PYLON
- The Jottings of Buster Wright -
19 October 2009

So, the whispering has already started amongst some of the 'faithful' Wanderers supporters. They want the manager out, apparently.

Why?!!

The season is just over two months old (as I type this). You've got to give the poor buggers a chance! Okay, so home results haven't exactly gone in our favour, but when I last looked, all but two of those home games ended with only a one goal difference - and one of those deficits was undoubtably caused by a forced venue and date change at short notice by a bunch of moaning minnies on the north side of the Water.

For some inexplicable reason, the team is not playing to its full potential. Perhaps one or two players need a good kick up the arse, but shouts (or, more strangely, whispers) of 'Jenko out' and accompanied by associated 'boos' are not going to put it right.

I believe I know one reason for those mumblings. They are no doubt coming from a fractious few who got pissed off when one of our strikers was shown the door, for what amounts to indiscipline within the ranks. Look, Shaggy's gone. There's no use holding a grudge. Get over it!

Please don't get me wrong here, losing to 'lower league' opposition such as Walton & Hersham and Burgess Hill Town in the two biggest F A competitions is clearly not acceptable, and I wouldn't doubt for one minute that Jenko and Joe would be the first to confirm this. But, hey, it goes with the territory. Since Cray's meteoric rise to the Ryman Premier, we've been the potential target of giantkillers, and who could have said that about Walton & Hersham back in the 70s, 80s and 90s?!

Come on, lads and lasses, you should be getting behind your manager and the team, not writing them off. A Mexican stand-off, with a handful of supporters trying to force the Chairman's hand, isn't going to happen. And do you know why? It's simple, really. Look at recent events in the Football League. John Barnes gets the bullet after half-a-dozen games in charge at Tranmere without a win. Peter Taylor was treated equally as badly at Wycombe Wanderers. Sacked by a quivering Board that couldn't see that a football season is a nine months long commitment. If it doesn't work out after this length of time, then is the time to consider the chop.

I'm a great believer in the 'they've got us into this mess, so let them get us out of it' philosophy. With Ian Jenkins, Joe Francis and Paul Blade at the helm, I am quietly confident that they will do just that - and without the assistance of a wayward beach ball in the six-yard box!

So, my parting thought this month is this. For all you sideline anarchists reading this, when was the last time the management team let Cray Wanderers FC down?

In the meantime. COME ON YOU WANDS!!
