A VIEW FROM THE FLOODLIGHT PYLON Hah! Did I laugh when I read on the Margate website that they had assumed their game against Cray on Bank Holiday Monday was three points already in the bag. An excellent display by the Wands certainly knocked the wind out of that sail. In a funny kind of way, Cray's 1-0 victory was poetic justice for Margate kicking the Mulligan out of their official tea room at half time. I see that the Ryman League has brought out a tome entitled "The First 100 Years of the Isthmian Football League". Considering it took Cray 95 of those years to get accepted into the Isthmian, I imagine the first 320 pages make for boring and irrelevant reading for Wanderers supporters. So, will I be investing in a copy? Hmmm. Maybe. But it'll have to be a second hand copy at a much lower price than the £14.95 plus £5.05 postage quoted, and probably purchased on greenmetropolis.com or somewhere of that ilk, with free postage to boot. The old Sunday game situation reared its not-too-ugly head (unless you're from one town in Essex) this month, when Hendon asked Cray to play their league match on Sunday 20 September instead of the already-listed Saturday 19 September, due to Hendon's landlords Wembley being drawn at home in the Vase on the Saturday. Unlike those tarts from Essex, the Wanderers duly obliged, by agreeing to the date switch. I bet Cray will be able to boast more friends in the Ryman Premier by the end of the season than Bilgericay can. It's a pity, in a way, that Cray were beaten 2-0 by Hendon after obliging the home team with the Sunday game. But the Wands came storming back just two days later (and without doing a 'Billericay' by concerning themselves with a proper day off in between) by going through that hell-hole called the Dartford Tunnel to pinch all three points at AFC Hornchurch. Believe me, brethren, don't be prepared to write Cray off too quickly this season. I hear a rumour that Tim Cahill still hasn't taken up the option to join Cray's 100 Club as indicated by the Chairman. Presumably he's got other things on his mind, like hoping his topsy-turvy Everton side remains in the top flight of English football. Perhaps he's thinking forward to the possibility that, if Everton get relegated, he won't be able to afford £8 a month. It must be a hard life being a Premiership player. That's the end for me again - maybe I'll have some more for you next month. In the meantime. COME ON YOU WANDS!!
