A VIEW FROM THE FLOODLIGHT PYLON
- The Jottings of Buster Wright -
30 August 2009

So, the first couple of weeks of the new season have been and gone. Cray have made a rip-roaring start to their first-ever Ryman Premier season by letting in eight goals in four of their five games so far - all the goals being conceded inside the first half-an-hour of the kick-off. Not an impressive statistic, it has to be said.

I think that Marconi's radio set must be working overtime in the Ryman. Any club that isn't called Tooting & Mitcham appears to be listening in as the broadcaster (is his name really Mr Cholmondley-Warner?) announces, "Go to Cray Wanderers and score at least two goals in the first 30 minutes, pack out your defence for the rest of the game, to ensure three valuable points".

Whoops! How remiss of me; I only mentioned Tooting & Mitcham when I should also have mentioned Aveley. Tooting scored none against Cray in the entire 90 minutes, let alone inside the first 30, whilst Aveley could manage only one goal. But then, to be fair to Aveley, they were first up and the bush telegraph hadn't had time to crank into action. Tooting, on the other hand, have absolutely no excuse.

And, what's all this cobblers about Essex girls not wanting to play on a Sunday? What absolute drivel, and I can't believe that the Ryman League allowed Billericay Town to get away with not soiling their pink stilettos with matching handbags and accessories one Sunday in August at Hayes Lane. Still, at least they lost a few more of the 'friends' that they thought they had.

But, good old Margate! They've confirmed that they will play Cray on a Sunday in November at Hayes Lane , when the real crap weather starts to set in. They're no wimps down at the 'Gate. Good, solid 'Kentish People' - or should that be 'People of Kent'? I suppose it depends really on where the River Medway flows.

Elsewhere in the Ryman Premier, things got off to an even worse start for Kingstonian, being hammered 5-0 at our pals' place at Darford and then 6-1 at home by Aveley during an opening fortnight that saw the K's lose their first four league matches. But, Kingstonian have been in the Ryman Premier (and higher) before, and it wasn't long before even they sussed out something was wrong. This week they delved into the transfer market to sign up seven or eight players from neighbouring clubs. It seemed to do the trick, because Kingstonian travelled to Hendon yesterday and stuffed the home team 3-0, to move off the bottom of the table.

.to be replaced by Bognor Regis Town. Now, I think I understand this right, every club that gets relegated does try just a little bit to get back to a 'promotable position' early on. It doesn't seem to be working at Bognor Regis Town, though. Last season, they fought for their Blue Square South life, and lost the battle by finishing second from bottom. Even if they hadn't had seven points deducted for fielding an ineligible player, they'd have finished in the same position. Dropping into the Ryman Premier, they now find themselves holding the rest of the teams up. Sadly, their unfortunate state of affairs last season was due to the ages-old problems of financial troubles, a players' exodus and their clubhouse being burned down. Little do Bognor know it, but they've got more in common with Cray's past than they realise. Let's hope that Bognor get through their current plight, but not until Cray have secured six points from them!

And, here I must end this report. Perhaps if there's something to write about next month then I shall return. In the meantime. COME ON YOU WANDS!!
