RYMAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SOUTH—SATURDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2007

MATCH REPORTER: GREG MANN

The Leatherhead hoodoo struck yet again on Saturday as for the tenth time of asking the Wands failed to beat their Surrey counterparts.

The first half was played at an amazing pace by both sides and it seemed only a matter of time before either goal was breached.

Colin Luckett had the game’s opening chance on 15 minutes. Taking an audacious free kick he spotted the home keeper badly placed berating his defenders but his quickly taken near-post effort was well saved by McCarthy.

Billy Marshall should have done better at the other end but Glen Knight was able to smother his shot as the high tempo continued.

Back came the Wands and only a lick of paint denied George Fenwick as his piledriver cannoned off the bar.

The opening goal came with ten minutes of the half remaining.

James Greenaway linked up well with Marshall and was able to carry the ball forward before planting his shot past Knight.

Always looking dangerous from set pieces the Wands saw Mark Willy head narrowly wide and then had a Michael Power effort ruled out for offside before the half time whistle sounded.

Junior Baker who, as always, was here, there and just about everywhere, had a golden opportunity to level the scores from a Ryan Royston flick on but his header found McCarthy rather than the back of the net. Likewise Greenaway failed to find the target choosing power rather than placement and Knight was able to avert any danger.

Despite numerous chances in open play it was a strange statistic that the Wands’ first corner of the game didn’t arrive until the 72nd minute. Agonisingly for Willy the ball hit a bobble as he teed up his shot with the goal at his mercy.

Scott Forrester, who had earlier missed a golden chance to settle the result, capitalised on Arron Day’s slip in the 90th minute to cut in and score Tanner’s second of the match before Lewis Wood broke through the home rearguard to net what would be just a consolation.

If nothing else the goal kept up the Wands’ record of having scored in every match played this season.
