RYMAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SOUTH—TUESDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2007
MATCH REPORTER: JERRY DOWLEN
Cray regained third place in the table after a reassuringly strong performance against their former Kent League rivals who are finding the going quite hard in their first season of Ryman League football.
Cray started like an express train, but shots from Michael Power and Ross Lover were comfortable for Fewell to hold after promising moves by the Wands, and the visiting ‘keeper also caught a flying header from Steve Aris.
Cray took the lead on 24 minutes when Mark Willy headed Ross Lover’s corner-kick back into the goalmouth and David Hall saw his looping header drop into the far corner of the net.
The lead was doubled on 37 minutes when Jamie Wood pushed a quickly-taken free-kick to Power, who stroked the ball through for Lewis Wood to get away from his marker and shoot low inside Fewell’s near post.
If the second half began with a rather dour spell of play it was good nevertheless to see the Cray defence looking so solid, with Aris a model of calm composure as the visitors pushed forward but couldn’t make a breakthrough.
Cray looked dangerous on the break, with Lewis Wood having a shot deflected wide and the ball snatched off his toes as he tried to take it past Fewell.
Power put his shots wide after receiving good passes from Jamie Wood and Lover, but on 75 minutes he produced one of his trademark moments of magic, a pass that sliced open the Oystermens’ defence and invited substitute Tyrone Sterling to cut in from the left and set up Jamie Wood for an easy tap-in.
Lasting out well in their second game in 48 hours, the Wands conceded an 89th minute goal when Neal turned inside the box and hit home a pearler, but this didn’t spoil a good evening’s work for the home side who must now test their promotion-seeking credentials with a tough assignment away to Walton & Hersham next Saturday (1.30pm).
Cray Wanderers: Knight, Day, Luckett (Sterling 54), Chapman, Willy, Aris, Lover, L Wood, J Wood (Amena 76), Power, Hall. Subs not used – Fenwick, Royston, Baker.
