CRAY WANDERERS 2 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 1 London Senior Cup—12 February 2008 Report by Greg Mann
Cray Wanderers 2, Wingate & Finchley 1 (London Senior Cup 12th February 2008)
The Wands booked their place in the quarter finals of the London Senior Cup with a close fought win over Wingate and Finchley.
With Colin Luckett forced out of the game due to an injury in the warm up the Wands back line took on an unfamiliar look but for most of the game stood firm.
Jamie Wood should have put the home side ahead midway through the first half but having been set up by Ross Lover, and with the goal at his mercy, he blazed over.
The Wands were however rewarded with the game’s opening goal on the half hour mark when Lover’s inswinging corner was spectacularly volleyed past his own keeper by the luckless Craig Ellis.
Parity was restored four minutes after the break when Dean Nyman made the most of Aaron Day’s weak pass back to Glen Knight before rounding the keeper and converting from a tight angle.
Jamie Wood was unlucky to see his free kick rattle the post before a double substitution saw the introduction of George Fenwick and Tommy Whitnell up front as the Wands pressed hard for the winner.
With time running out and with spectators fearing an extra 30 minutes in freezing conditions the tie was settled.
Jamie Wood’s inch perfect crossfield ball fell invitingly to Michael Power who, in one movement, controlled and shot expertly past Gavin King for the winner.
Cray Wanderers: Knight, Kempster, Power, Chapman, Day, Royston, Lover (Whitnell 65), Morris, J.Wood, Fenwick (L.Wood 65), Sterling. Unused subs: Hall, Jenkins.
MOM: Michael Power
