RYMAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SOUTH—TUESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2007
MATCH REPORTER: JERRY DOWLEN
Having scored five goals at Molesey on Saturday the Wands went into reverse gear and conceded five as Ashford rocked them with some deadly first half finishing at Hayes Lane.
17 year old Jimmy Bottle, a new face from the visitors’ reserve team, struck the net on 8 and 13 minutes, with Rob Denness making it three in the 24th minute.
It was a case of the visitors having three shots and scoring from all three, because Cray weren’t being outplayed and they retrieved a goal in the 41st minute. Mark Willy crossed from deep on the left and George Fenwick connected with a good header into the net against his former club.
Unfortunately for the Wands the deficit was swiftly three goals again when Joby Thorogood picked his spot for a fine finish with a half-volley from the edge of the box on 42 minutes.
For the second half Cray put on striker Michael Power for defender Aaron Day.
It seemed for a while that Power might inspire the Wands to an unlikely comeback. From a narrow angle he sent in a shot that Sam Moore could only half stop, but the rebound didn’t go to a Cray forward. Then came a good run and skilful cross from Power but Jamie Wood’s flick-volley went narrowly wide.
Wood’s corner-kick from the right on 70 minutes was firmly headed home by Power, and the Cray substitute looked ready to score again after being put through on goal but he sent his shot wide.
That was to be Cray’s last chance to make a close game of it, for Ashford broke away on 82 minutes and Bottle’s pass from the left gave substitute Walid Matata a clear run at goal to score Ashford’s fifth within a few minutes of his arrival from the bench.
Cray Wanderers: Knight, Day (Power 46), Willy, Fenwick, Curnow, Royston, J Wood, Kempster, Baker, Morris, Sterling. Subs not used: Matthews, Chapman, L Wood, Hall.
