2006-07 was the only season that Cray have had three abandoned matches, writes Ian Fordyce. Our first recorded abandonment occurred in a pre-1900 Kent League match, which was abandoned after 79 minutes with Cray 3-1 up. A few weeks later the remaining 11 minutes were played with a final score of 4-1.
Recorded below are the other abandoned games, together with the respective final results where played, to date.

1957-58 |
A remarkable match, in which the ref guessed wrongly that it would be too dark to finish, 10 minutes early. Also remembered for prolonged argument, between Chingford’s 50-year-old player/manager who wanted to play on as “his team were getting on top”! (having just pulled the score back from 1-10 to 3-11) and the ref. Strangely, the 4-0 rematch score improved Cray’s goal average. |
|
1963-64 |
This match was a replay of a two-leg match spread over 3 months, eventually lasting 5 hours and 50 minutes, being the Wands’ longest-ever cup tie. The referee gave up because “unable to control”. The fourth match generally acknowledged as one of Cray’s best-ever performances, and eventually led to them winning the cup in May. |
|
1974-75 |
Older supporters will remember the extended stoppage following Cray’s ‘keeper Mal Sutton suffering a triple leg fracture when the Wands were 2-0 up. |
|
1979-80 |
At the time very few spectators realised this match had not been completed. |
